What Image Enhancement Cannot Do
Increasing the display size of an image does not always create genuine recorded detail. Some enhancement methods can make edges or patterns easier to see, but they may also produce visual artifacts that should not be mistaken for original information. Any comparison or identification opinion must account for image quality, viewpoint, lighting, motion, compression, and the suitability of the reference material.
A missing metadata field does not by itself prove manipulation. Metadata can be removed during routine export, messaging, editing, or platform processing. Authentication requires interpretation of the full file and its known history.
Frequently Asked Questions About Image Forensics
Can you tell whether an image was altered?
We can examine the file and visual content for indicators of editing, compositing, cloning, inconsistent compression, lighting conflicts, metadata issues, and synthetic or AI generation. A conclusion may range from supported to inconclusive depending on the source and available comparison material.
Can a blurry face or license plate be made clear?
We can assess and clarify the recorded information, but the result depends on the number and quality of pixels, focus, exposure, movement, distance, angle, and compression. We do not promise identification before examining the source.
Is a screenshot useful evidence?
It may still contain relevant visual information, but screenshots will not contain the original metadata and may add scaling or compression. The original image or source device export should be obtained whenever possible.
Can measurements be taken from one photograph?
Yes, but it depends on the image information and potentially other available data. Reliable photogrammetry generally requires known dimensions, camera information, scene geometry, reference objects, or additional imagery.
